31st of July, Tuesday. It brings memories of another day to me. Same date, same day. A violent storm was raging. A boy was lying on the floor, curled up under a ragged blanket. The boy was counting seconds…thirty…twenty…ten…One! The door fell open. And it began.
My dear friends! Happiest birthday to the boy who lived! To Harry James Potter!
As you already know today is Harry’s birthday. Forgive me, but if I don’t fangirl today…then when?
So here I present to you my top seven rakish and perhaps ridiculous reasons why I absolutely adore Harry Potter.
I often find people saying that Harry is a boring character. I guess it is because they don’t bother reading the books. In the books Harry has a kickass sense of humour, an enviable ability to answer back and is so sassy that you can’t help but admire his guts for saying the things he says.
“Listening to the news,” said Harry in a resigned voice.
His aunt and uncle exchanged looks of outrage.
“Listening to the news! Again?”
“Well, it changes every day, you see,” said Harry.
His disregard for Rules.
Don’t you love him for this? I do. I am completely awed by how brave and reckless Harry is. I thoroughly enjoy his knack for getting into unnecessary trouble and then dealing with it like a boss. And he’s disregard for rule- his night strolls under his cloak, going to see Aragog in the forest or teaching DA club right under Umbridge’s pink nose! Harry has courage that only comes from being and doing rather than from reading. Cheers to his bravery!
His ability to make others feel important.
Why do you think Dobby died as a free elf? Because my Harry treated him like a person. He was close to Luna even when people made fun of him. He was one of the few people Neville relied on. Inspite of being so famous and bewitchingly amazing, he saw the best in others. Very few people can do it. He is one of the few rare ones.
Tell me, didn’t he do this to you too? Didn’t your journey with Harry made you feel special? Didn’t it take away every thing that troubled you? When you are with him… reading his thoughts… having adventures with him, don’t you feel cared for and cherished? Didn’t he make your life magical as well?
We live in an era where backstabbing and misunderstandings are common issues. But look at Harry. Harry has been fiercely loyal to his loved ones even when so many people wanted him dead. Even during turbulent times when people raised questions on the members of the Order- he refused to believe any of them would betray him. His loyalty to Sirius, to Ron and Hermione, to Hogwarts and to Dumbeldore is legendary. What does the minister say about him? Yea, Dumbeldore’s man through and through.
His ability to feel pain.
Most heroes I heard about when I young were brave and strong. They killed people and they were above worldly things like pain. Harry was different. He knew about pain. And not just any kind of pain. He knew the pain of being bullied, the pain of being friendless. He knew the pain of losing loved ones and the pain of being misunderstood by them. He felt it and he made it okay. He showed me that sometimes it is going to hurt more than we can handle, some wounds will pain so hard that you will think that you will never feel anything ever again.
“…the fact that you can feel pain like this is your greatest strength.”
-Dumbledore (Order of Phoenix)
He freed me. He taught me that it is okay to be hurt, okay to be angry. Our emotions and feelings are our own, and we need not apologize for how we feel.
His balanced Point of view.
Now, living with Dursleys could have drived anyone crazy or depressed. All the harassment is illegal if you ask me. But it didn’t break down Harry. We never saw him acting like a victim. He was thrusted with enormous responsibilities at such an young age. But it didn’t impact him in a negative way. Harry still had a healthy self-esteem. He knew his own worth. He knew he was more than what his scar made him. Also, he wasn’t proud and pompous about being the chosen one. He was well grounded as a person. A brilliant example, a shining role model.
For being himself.
I love Harry for everything he is. I love his self-less hero thing which earns him points for moral fibre. His ability to bear all the pain Umbridge gave him. His ability to trust people. And Expelliarmus spell! No wizard has made better use of that spell than him I swear! His messy black hair and his topping the DADA classes. His love for Dumbeldore inspite of the fact that he orchestrated his death.
Well. I could go on forever, so I better stop here. Needless to say, he is my most favorite character of the series!
This is a rather impulsive post and everything I wrote is my personal opinion. Do tell me your views. What do you like most about Harry? I would love hearing what you have to say about my hero in the comments below.
Let this day begin then! Many many birthday cheers for Harry James Potter!
To the boy who lived.
To the boy I have loved. Always.
